Ava has been working incredibly hard at her therapy and yesterday surprised herself by getting to the top of the climbing wall in the SI (Sensory Integration) room. Whilst still being very unsteady on her feet, she is now managing to stand independently for longer (5 seconds has increased to a full minute) and her upper body strength has definitely increased. It will be a long and uncertain road to recovery for Ava, however we have been fortunate enough to have excellent therapists at the Portland and the brilliant Dr Margaret Mayston, physiotherapy and neuroscience guru, has also taken an interest in Ava's case. She will be guiding the therapists who are treating Ava and we are extremely grateful to have the benefit of her considerable knowledge and expertise. Amongst her suggestions is a review of Ava's footwear and the possibility of orthotic ankle-foot braces to give Ava some much needed stability and support, so we are off to see an orthotist on Monday. Ava is hoping this will mean she can wear pink Nike trainers to school, but we shall see...
