Day +45

Posted on: 12/05/2014

Tonight is officially our last night under the watchful eye of Archangel Raphael! Today Ava had 5 rounds of oral medicine (undetected in fruit juice) and although her neutrophil count was still 700, Dr Biffi confirmed that she is happy to discharge her from the isolation unit tomorrow! Needless to say, we have had a very happy afternoon chatting about all of the things that Ava is desperate for once outside of the hospital. 52 days in one small room (+45 is days post-transplant, we also had a week of chemo before that) and cucumber is at the top of the list! We will be staying in a hotel opposite the hospital for the next 5-6 weeks and will need to return most days to the outpatient unit for bloodwork, antibiotics, antifungals, any necessary platelet and blood transfusions. We will also still need to adhere to various rules until Ava's immune system is stronger, including disinfecting our clothes with Napisan and avoiding certain foods for risk of bacteria and/or allergy. However we will also have the luxury of fresh air, freedom to run around and access to edible food, so we will gladly oblige. Well done to Ava for being the bravest 7 year old in Milan!
