Day +46

Posted on: 13/05/2014

I must admit that I was slightly nervous about Ava leaving the hospital with only 700 neutrophils, however this morning they had shot up to 1100! Dr Biffi officially discharged us from the isolation unit at around 11am and we headed straight for the hotel. Ava was a little overwhelmed by the sensory onslaught of being outside and chose to stay indoors until lunchtime. She celebrated her discharge with a huge plate of cucumber, followed by some grilled chicken. After lunch, she declared "my legs say they are up and running again!" and proceeded to sprint up and down the long hotel corridor a dozen times. Despite a dark sky and forecast of thunderstorms, Ava then begged to walk the nine tenths of a mile to see the ducks and turtles at a man-made lake. She did this without any sign of tiredness and practically skipped all the way back. I cannot tell you how relieved I was to see her so active. I have been worried about both loss of muscle tone from a very sedentary 7 weeks and also possible disease progression, which could have been triggered by the intense chemotherapy. Luckily she seemed on excellent form. We will return to the hospital at 9am tomorrow to continue her treatment as an outpatient. In the meantime we are unspeakably grateful to Dr Biffi and every single doctor and nurse at San Raffaele who has taken such impeccable care of Ava.
